Environmental Control Systems (ECS) operate in high-demand environments such as mobile shelters, defense trailers, and NBC-protected enclosures. These systems demand precise and reliable thermal management. By integrating mechanical bulb and capillary switches, ECS platforms gain accurate thermal cut-in and cut-out control that withstands fluctuating ambient temperatures and supports mission-critical performance.

Explore our bulb and capillary switches for advanced thermal management solutions.

Bulb and Capillary Switches for Environmental Control SystemsMechanical Switches in ECS: A Technical Overview

The 358 series auto-reset bulb and capillary thermostats deliver SPDT mechanical switching. Each unit features a fluid-filled sensing bulb connected to an actuator via a capillary tube. As temperature shifts, the fluid expands or contracts. This movement actuates internal contacts to open or close at a specific switching point. Consequently, the switch makes or breaks circuits automatically at a pre-set temperature. This ensures consistent and repeatable performance, even under high-vibration conditions.

Implementation in Split and Mobile ECS Platforms

Rack-mounted split ECS units rely on these thermostats to cycle compressors and protect evaporator coils from freezing. In mobile cart-based ECS systems, the switches automatically manage heating and cooling. This prevents thermal overshoot and eliminates the need for manual resets. Thanks to their compact design and rear-terminal configuration, they integrate easily into space-constrained assemblies and armored control boxes.

These switches tolerate ambient conditions up to 250 °F. For systems installed in high ambient temperature zones, optional ambient compensation maintains calibration. Additionally, users can choose from multiple bulb materials—including stainless steel and nickel-plated copper—and a range of capillary lengths. This versatility enables flexible routing and simplifies installation in complex ECS enclosures. When paired with R407C refrigerant systems and hermetic scroll-type compressors, these switches maintain stable mechanical control.

Key Performance Enhancements

  • Automatic Reset: Restores functionality without manual intervention
  • High Cycle Life: Performs up to 100,000 cycles at 15-25 Amps
  • Custom Fitment: Adapts to multiple shaft styles, dial rotations, and mounting configurations

Optimized for Tactical and Field-Deployed Systems

ECS platforms require autonomous and highly reliable control solutions. These SPDT mechanical thermostats meet that need. They safeguard against freeze-ups, initiate ventilation, and regulate thermal loads with precision. By leveraging mechanical actuation, ECS systems enhance operational efficiency in mission-critical deployments.

Bulb & Capillary Thermostats

Original equipment manufacturers worldwide use thermostat switches designed and manufactured by STEMCO, a Division of Senasys. No matter which style or model you choose, all of the capillary thermostat switches operate using the same physics. A fluid is encapsulated in a metal and when the temperature changes the fluid either expands or contracts. This fluid change moves a diaphragm which is in touch with a snap action switch and either opens or closes a circuit.

Ambient Compensation

Our capillary thermostats can be ambient compensated to offset the differential in temperature which keeps our thermostat controls more accurate as it’s environment changes.

Custom Options

Capillary thermostat switches built by Senasys can also be built to customer specifications. This insures you get the exact control you want without paying for features you don’t need.
